Building Bridges is something we must strive to do everyday.
It can mean cementing a relationship or establishing a presence, it can equally mean reconnecting with an old friend.
The concept of building bridges simply means forming relationships that are very crucial in your career.
When you cross people’s path, you want to leave an impression on them that enables them want to meet with you again.
In the course of my life, I have had to build numerous bridges which turned out to be very resourceful.
In building relationships, I have employed humor, knowledge and most importantly, wisdom. Don’t underrate these three traits when building bridges.
Equally, don’t be quick to burn bridges. In my experience, I had the option of burning a bridge when I left my position as Head Scout and First Assistant to Gernot Rohr in the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles. The people who handled things left the door wide open for the bridge to be burnt.
But I didn’t. What I did instead was maintain a composure that people found hard to understand. I allowed issues and incidents that followed to vindicate my position.
Be slow to burn bridges, especially in a conflict as situations easily get misunderstood.
Take for example, sending a nasty mail after a partner had maltreated you. The email you send might inflame an already bad situation and bury the substance of the maltreatment. Sometimes by your actions, you the innocent might become the accused.
Instead of burning bridges, leave things as they are, hard as it may be to do.
One of the key elements of a success path that you need in your career, whoever you are, is to learn and master the art of building bridges. They serve as a big stepping stone to becoming successful.
