June 12 – Democratic Awakening In Nigeria

On this day exactly 27 years ago, something happened in Nigeria in a way that it had never done before……an election took place and Nigerians actually broke ranks with bias on ethnic, tribal, religious and social status grounds, and voted for their choice of President for the country.

The symbol of that day was MKO Abiola, who would have given Nigeria’s record that America could only lay claim to 23 years later.

Abiola could not fulfil the democratic legacy of June 12, but I share with you, a short tribute to the day.

Tunde your talk cuts across tribal lines and every well meaning Nigerian can identify with what you said. What happened on June 12 1993 was a travesty and Nigeria is still reeling from the after-effects. We have not recovered and we will never recover from the injustice. I have no doubts that Nigeria would have been a much better place had we allowed Justice to take its course. Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola (MKO) The “Aare Ona Kankafo XIV of Yorubaland” is my hero and he showed selflessness, patriotism and determination but alas the powers that be at the time nipped his aspirations in the bud. The memories remain but are too painful to bear. May he continue to rest in peace.
