TAKING THE EXPERT POSITION

How to position yourself as an expert in your field

Did you know that to make progress and develop in your career, it always helps to position yourself as an expert in what you do? It’s not all the time that your paper qualifications give your superiors the full realisation of just how much of a grasp you have of things you do.

In positioning yourself as an expert in your field, there are a few things you might need to do to stand out.

1. You must have an interest in the area of your perceived field:

For you to stand out in your given field, you have to have a deep interest in the subject matter and field. It’s not just enough to know about it. You have to ensure you are very passionate about it to do it consistently.

2. Turn it into your territory:
To become a real true expert, you have to position yourself as someone who cares about it, and who is passionate.

In a meeting where I and other team leads had to pitch to investors about general business some time ago, I got an opportunity to have a 5-minute pitch to bring a football element into the proposal. to do football. But by the time I was done with the pitch, I held them captive by showing my passion and interest in what I was talking about. So much so that any questions they had, they inadvertently turned in my direction to ask. This is to show how passionate I am about football and how well-positioned I was on the topic of football.

3. Don’t shy away:
If you are very acquainted with your KTA toolkit, you will observe that shying away from opportunities is not ideal. Ask for opportunities in the field that you are well passionate about. The worst that can happen is that they say no. But you would have made your point.
