OVERCOMING ADVERSITIES IN THE WORKPLACE

It is amazing how events in the football world can actually teach executives on overcoming adversity and challenges.

Having worked with the Nigerian national football team (the Super Eagles) for five and half years, I consistently faced challenges, especially from the media.

Now this might sound surprising, especially when you consider the fact that I was a journalist before getting my coaching badges and going into coaching with the team.

Colleagues who could have supported/celebrated me were the first to cast stones and criticism at me.

Compared with the corporate world, you would find yourself repeatedly facing adversity & challenges and most of these would come from colleagues & friends.

They would attack ideas you raise, belittle every effort you take and persistently criticise your every move.

What can you do? How do you overcome the challenge?

You overcome it by not focusing on it.

It’s easy to let their words and their actions determine how you judge yourself.

It’s easy to succumb to external pressure trying to control who you are and what you can do.

However, stand your ground. Especially when you are certain you are doing the right thing.

Refuse and reject other people’s thoughts about you from becoming your reality. Constantly remind yourself that you are better and capable.

Most importantly, don’t allow yourself to become so weak that your inner self becomes an adversary too.

I would leave you with this: “Do not create an internal adversary that would let you succumb to external adversity”
